A recent review of the Health Star rating has seen some recommendations that, if implemented, will see Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) with a lower health star rating than Canola and Sunflower oil. ?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is NOT in line with current evidence. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The recommendation for the ranking is based on % of saturated fat only so does not take into consideration any other important factors when choosing an edible oil (outline above). While Sunflower and Canola do have a lower saturated fat %, the % from EVOO is still low and the dominance of mono-unsaturated fats, presence of anti-oxidants and absence of polar (toxic) compounds make EVOO the superior choice.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Unfortunately if this recommendation is implemented this will lead to even more confusion for consumers.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The criteria for the health star rating should be reviewed for edible oils or alternatively no health star rating should be applied to these products to avoid this confusion!
