CHEERS TO GUT HEALTH?

Kombucha (also called probiotic drinks by some brands) and prebiotic drinks are a consistently growing market. But are they worth your cash?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For those of you are wondering the difference between a probiotic and prebiotic.
• Probiotics are good bacteria.
• Prebiotic refers to a specific type of fibre that is known to act as the ‘food’ for good bacteria in our gut- helping them to multiply.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The truth is there’s no evidence to say that probiotics in these drinks actually make it through the acidic environment of our stomach to the bowel where they work their magic. Some probiotic products have some evidence (some yoghurts and probiotic supplements) but we can’t transfer his to these drinks because the types, amount and mode of transport for the good bacteria are different.

I’m a big fan of prebiotic fibre so the more the better I say. Fruits and veg with should remain your main source of prebiotic fibre however.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
BUT you might find they do something good for you, they usually do no harm (be careful if you’ve got any gut conditions or are pregnant) and there are plenty around that are a lot lower in sugar than other drinks. This one had the equivalent of half a teaspoon and it’s from the fruit- nothing added. So if you like them then go for it!
