I’ve travelled for work a lot over the past few years and while it can be very hard to eat as well on the road as you do at home, here are the pretty common sense strategies I use to keep as healthy as possible.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Get gut friendly. Travelling itself and the different food we eat and (often) extra alcohol ? consumed takes a toll on our gut health. So prioritising getting in enough fibre, resistant starch and probiotics (good bacteria) will help. Taking a probiotic supplement may also be useful while and shortly after travel.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Eat enough protein at breakfast. This will help keep you fuller for longer and hence prevent buying non-nourishing snacks between meals.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you do snack then take your own. Or visit a supermarket at your destination to stock up.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Hydration can fall away when you travel which will make you feel sluggish, can cause headaches, poor immunity and irritability amongst other things. So make sure you drink enough water!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Mixed dishes can get out of control on the calorie front. Protein and vegetable dishes are a better choice for most of your meals.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And while you can’t control exactly what goes into your dish when you’re out you can choose or request healthier cooking methods and ensure you get enough salad or veg by swapping out chips or ordering extra veg or salad on the side.
