Following a question on my story a few days ago- I had multiple people ask me what to look for when it comes to Kombucha. We had a great session at @dietitianconnection #foodsetters by @drjoannamcmillan and pictured above are the key take aways.

A bit of extra explanation.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Alcohol. Unfortunately some Kombuchas have been found to contain more alcohol than is acceptable. Play it safe by avoiding home or cafe made kombuchas and buy only those where the brand states the alcohol content.

Sugar. Some contain a stack of added sugar! A small amount is totally ok though.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Processed sweeteners. Stevia and Erythritol are used to sweeten some Kombuchas. While a little Stevia here and there is ok- we really don’t know what effects processed sweeteners have on the gut (no data yet). Sugar alcohols such as erythritol can cause IBS symptoms in some people, although Erythritol tends to be better tolerated compared to some of the other sugar alcohols.

SCOBY. Some brands compromise the bacteria content and authenticity by mass producing Booch from an extract – not from a SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast). Those that are made with a SCOBY will have strands floating in it.

Refrigeration. Cool temps are what keep the yeast and bacteria alive while stopping the fermentation process.

Any that make outrageous claims like those stated above should be avoided on principle! There’s no evidence to support Kombucha as a miracle drink.
