This recipe might be one of my proudest moments as a plant-based Haligonian ?? I always dreamed of a vegan version of the famous Maritime donair, coming close with a popular donair fast food restaurant in Halifax but it always lacked that quintessential donair sauce that completes the whole package ✨ enter, my VEGAN DONAIR SAUCE ? Once I made this seitan recipe from @hotforfood (which was surprisingly very easy), I knew the one thing I had to do was make the perfect vegan donair sauce. I think I may have done it ? My maritimer family will be VERY proud ?.
.
If you’ve never tried donair it’s basically shaved meat topped with simple veggies (usually tomatoes and white onion) with a sweet, garlicy sauce. I subbed the meat for homemade seitan, used a @silverhillsbakery wrap, and topped with the donair sauce. This sauce can also be added to pizza, garlic fingers, French fries, and pretty much any other greasy food ✨.
.
To make ??:
Soak 1/2 cup of cashews in boiling water for about 30 minutes. Add to a blender with 3/4 cup unsweetened plant-based milk, 2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar, 1.5 tsp of garlic powder, and 3 tbsp of sugar. Blend, then refrigerate until cool so it thickens slightly. Enjoy on everything ?
