⭐️PSA: Eating bread might actually be the “healthier” choice!⭐️
.
A cucumber sandwich might be a fun way to eat a cucumber, I won’t argue with that. ?♀️But it’s not bread.?♀️ And from a biological and neurochemical perspective it’s not going to satisfy our bodies the same way. Carbs are our bodies preferred energy source. And when we avoid them our bodies amp up something called neuropeptide Y (or NYP) which causes us to desire carbs more. To be drawn to them. (i.e. it’s not your lack of willpower)
.
So while someone on social media might be raving our their latest cucumber sammie remember this ?
.
⭐️You see the sandwich but you may not see the other things like the low energy, food obsession, late night binge eating session, and mental anguish. (not saying that everyone who eats a cuc sammie is binge eating. I don’t know their life. But again from a very biological perspective… we need more carbs on the regular to be properly fueled mentally & physically)
.
⭐️As a Registered Dietitian I actually recommend that we have carbs at all meals, ideally. I sure as heck make sure to have them at my meals because if I don’t I’ll be hungry 20 minutes later and likely in the pantry looking for cookies ? because those have sugar which is a fast acting carb… my body needs some ASAP!
.
Instead of waiting for that NYP to build up (which it will do as to continue to avoid carbs time after time) and then break the damn causing a binge, try something different… Try eating carbs right off the bat! Just try it as an experiment. If you include carbs at meals what do you notice. Do you think about food less? Are you feeling full and satisfied longer? Do you have more energy? I thiiiink I know what the outcome is gonna be! ?
