What the word “clean” means ?
.
In terms of food… nothing. It’s a made up term ?‍♀️
.
A term that has come to cause many (my past self included!) SO much guilt when we eat something deemed “unclean”.
.
People typically mean “nutrient dense” when they use the term “clean” and there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to eat nutrient dense foods (I teach members of @the_socieaty how to pair food freedom with honoring their body and health which includes gentle nutrition!) but the issue arises with that guilt over eating something that goes against the “clean” label.
.
Deeming food as “bad” or “unhealthy” (let’s be real- that is what is implied with anything that doesn’t fit the “clean” label!) can make us desire those foods more and then eat more of them when we do allow ourselves to have them. One study showed that dieters (those who would deem a milkshake “bad” or say that can only have so much) drank more of a milkshake VS non-dieters in the same setting.
.
The words you use when talking about food matter. This is a KEY first step if you’re wanting to get rid of your food rules and become an intuitive eater. So the next time you eat, shop, etc. take a little inventory of the words you’re using. Are they neutral descriptors? If not, what words can you swap in to BE neutral?
