Are you REALLY listening to your body? ?Maybe not! ?
.
The phrase “listening to your body” gets slung around more than pizza dough at a pizza parlor ?and the kicker is that most people don’t even know what it truly means ?♀️ So a lot of the information that is being spread is wrong! Ugh! Let’s clear that up, shall we??
.
?♀️Listening to your body doesn’t mean you just follow a gut reaction. If that were true I’d be strollin’ through the ice cream aisle and be all “Man all of these candies look so good!” and I’d come home with more candy than my pantry shelves could hold ?
.
Listening to your body ecnompasses the 3 areas of the human brain. I mean, they’re ALL a part of your body so if we are listening to our body we’d be listening to them all, right? Here are the 3 parts:
.
1️⃣ The instinctual part ? So this would be that instinct of “Ooh! Candy! Want! Need!”
.
2️⃣ The emotions & feelings part ? feelings are layered upon instincts for expanded awareness. This would be more of the “Ice cream is delish! It brings me joy and reminds me of childhood memories. Can’t wait for an ice cream date night now!”
.
3️⃣ The higher thought/rational part ? this integrates instinct & feeling through reflection. Where our “catalog” of memories is housed, if you will. It’s where we think about “Does this feel good? Is it enjoyable? When I ate that much last time did I feel sick? Do I have the budget to purchase all of this?” etc.
.
Truly listening to your body takes all 3 into account. So, basically, most of the posts saying that listening to your body is your first initial thought aren’t giving your entire brain the credit it deserves. The brain, while yes it’s had all of these pieces, has developed to function at a much more intricate level for humans beyond just the “See food. Need food.”
.
Tuning into all 3 parts of your brain takes practice!
