In a further bid to make improvements to the effect social media has on our mental health, @Instagram has announced that they will restrict posts about weight loss products and cosmetic surgery. ????
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Until now, mega influencers (think the Kardashians) have been paid huge dollars to promote weight loss products that not only have no evidence to back up their use but their promotion and use could actually be damaging to people’s mental and/or physical health. Instagram has been working with body positive campaigners such as @jameelajamilofficial to drive positive change on their platform and restrict visibility or remove content that promote weight loss products. ????
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Instagram has stipulated that under the new policy:
• Posts that have “an incentive to buy or include a price” will be restricted to being viewed by people over the age of 18 only.
• Posts that make a miraculous claim about a certain diet or weight loss product/s and are linked to a commercial offer such as a discount code will be removed completely.
• Instagram users will be able to report posts that they believe violate Instagram’s new policy, the report will then be reviewed by Instagram’s content reviewers and appropriate action taken. So if you see these posts then report them!!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As you can see, I’m excited about these changes (although I would like to see these products not be promoted at all).
