WHY we should steer clear of deli meats (not pictured):
• Current evidence shows that there are some naturally occurring chemicals in processed meat that cause them to be carcinogenic. These chemicals have been found to damage the cells that line the bowel, which can lead to bowel cancer.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
• In addition, the nitrite and nitrate preservatives that are added in order to preserve processed meats can lead to stomach and bowel cancer.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
• The high salt content of these meats also increases the risk for cardiovascular (heart) disease.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Deli meats are popular because they are convenient- especially at lunch time. But here are some healthy alternatives you can have in your sandwich or wrap and still get a good amount of protein. @who and @heartfoundationau recommend to avoid deli meats.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In some countries there are limits on tinned fish due to mercury so check your local recommendations. In Australia the recommendations are for no more than 3 x 150g serves per week.
