Butter vs Margarine

Butter vs Margarine

Butter vs Margarine

Unfortunately there isn’t a clear answer to this. It depends.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It depends on your personal health situation, your preference and what you’re wanting to use it for.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
BUTTER. About 80% of the fat in butter is saturated, too much saturated fat can have negative effects on your blood fat profile and heart health. So for this reason, if you have high cholesterol or a family history of heart disease then margarine is a better option over butter.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
MARGARINE. Contains less saturated fat at about 20%. In Australia margarine products have minimal trans fats (Trans fats have similar or more negative effects as that of saturated fat). In other countries such as the USA and UK this is not regulated so you need to check the label to avoid products with trans fats. Margarine is the less natural of the 2 considering the ingredients used in making it
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Both butter and margarine contain about the same calories/kilojoules per teaspoon. However, because margarine spreads more easily you tend to use less- so this is the better option for you if you’re trying to lose weight. There are some ‘light’ options that are lower in calories but you can think of them as simply watered down options of the original version
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Overall it is best to use BOTH of these spreads sparingly. Top your toast with more nourishing alternatives such as avocado, ricotta or cottage cheese, olive oil, natural peanut butter (you’re welcome) or hummus.
