• Red meat refers to all mammalian muscle meat, including, beef, veal, pork, lamb, mutton, horse, and goat.
• Lean red meat is rich in protein, iron, zinc, Vitamin B12 as well as other B group vitamins. ??
• Evidence is inconclusive but there is some indication that higher intakes of red meat may increase the risk of some cancers. For this reason professional bodies recommend moderate consumption. Less than 100g per day as an AVERAGE is a good aim. Most red meat portions are MUCH bigger than 100g so if your portions are bigger then include red meat on only a few days a week.

• Processed meats are those that have been changed/made through salting, curing, fermentation, smoking, or other processes to enhance flavour or improve preservation and include ham, salami, sausages and hot dogs. These are the ones that should definitely be minimised or avoided where possible. Processed meats are often based on red meats but can include other meat such as chicken.
• Eating processed meat has been linked with an increased risk of colorectal cancer.
Processed meats are seldom in our fridge. But I certainly didn’t say no to these Kilpatrick Oysters topped with chorizo a couple of weeks back while on holidays ??
