Protein powers on the most part are not a necessity as protein needs can be met through food. They do still add calories, which if not used for body functions or burned as energy or stored as fat.

However, protein powders may be chosen for convenience, personal preference, to increase how satisfying a snack or meal is.

Here’s a simple guide to the main types
✔️Whey: Extracted from milk, whey is the most researched of all of the protein types, with lots of evidence supporting it’s use in muscle building and repair and some evidence that it helps with satiety. Whey does not coagulate in the stomach which means faster digestion and faster availability of amino acids to the muscles. Standard whey protein is approx 20% protein, Whey protein concentrate (WPC) is approx 70-80% and whey protein isolate (WPI) is approx 90%. WPI is most expensive but contains little fat or carbs. Whey protein hydrolysate (WPH) is where the proteins have been broken down into some short chain proteins and amino acids. More research is needed here to justify putting up with the higher cost and bitter taste. WPC or WPI are the picks for whey. WPI is more expensive but is often cheapest if you compare cost per gram of protein.
✔️Casein is the other main milk protein. It does coagulate in the stomach which slows it’s digestion and absorption. Not as efficacious as whey in muscle building.
✔️Pea and soy protein are great option especially for those following a vegan diet. These proteins also do not coagulate in the stomach so are easily absorbed and readily available to the muscles
➡️ DO check the ingredients list to check for added sugars, fillers, thickeners.
